Contact lens timer
A free contact lens timer that loads ten minutes, the usual wait for a rub-and-rinse soak before reinserting a lens. Change the digits for anything longer, from a six-hour peroxide soak to a full day of wear. On a desktop, Notify reaches you in any window, which the phone's timer cannot do while you are working. Also searched as contact lens wear timer, lens soaking timer, contacts timer. This page is not medical advice. Follow your eye-care provider's instructions.
What to time
- Peroxide neutralizing. Hydrogen peroxide systems need at least six hours in their special case. Start the 6 hour timer when you close the lid.
- Short soak. Ten minutes in multipurpose solution after a rub-and-rinse, or whatever the bottle states.
- Daily wear limit. Set the 8 hour timer or your own limit when you put lenses in, so they come out on time.
- Screen breaks. Dry eyes are the most common lens complaint. The break timer runs the 20-20-20 rule on Repeat.
A typical first-week wear schedule
New wearers often build up gradually. Your provider may give a different plan, which takes priority over this table.
| Day | Wear time | Timer |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | 4 hours | 4 hour timer |
| Day 2 | 6 hours | 6 hour timer |
| Day 3 | 8 hours | 8 hour timer |
| Day 4 onward | Add 1 to 2 hours a day up to a full day | Edit the digits |
Timer tips for lens wearers
- Long timers need the tab open and the computer awake. A sleeping laptop does not ring.
- Take lenses out at once if your eyes are red, painful or blurry, timer or not, and call your provider.
- The 10 minute timer is the same preset without the lens notes.
Frequently asked questions
How long do hydrogen peroxide lens solutions take to neutralize?
At least six hours in the case that came with the solution. Lenses taken out early can sting badly, so set the 6 hour timer when you close the case.
How many hours a day can I wear contacts?
It depends on the lens type and your eyes. Many people wear daily lenses 10 to 14 hours, but follow the schedule your eye-care provider gave you.
What is the 20-20-20 rule for lens wearers?
Every 20 minutes, look about 20 feet away for 20 seconds and blink fully. It eases the dryness that long screen sessions cause with lenses in.
