Baby feeding timer

A free baby feeding timer that opens as a stopwatch with laps. Press Start when the baby latches, press Lap when you switch sides, and the page shows each side and the total. It works one-handed on a phone or tablet beside the chair, with no app to install at 3 a.m. Also searched as breastfeeding timer, nursing timer, bottle feeding timer. This page is not medical advice. Talk to a pediatrician or lactation consultant about your baby's feeding.

How to time a feed

  1. Press Start, or Space, when the baby starts feeding.
  2. Press Lap, or L, when you switch sides. The lap shows the first side's length.
  3. Press Pause if the baby dozes off, and Resume when feeding restarts.
  4. When the feed ends, note the total and the laps, then press R for the next one.

Typical patterns in the early weeks

From healthychildren.org, the parenting site of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Every baby is different, and these are ranges, not targets.

WhatTypicalNote
Feeds per day8 to 12 in 24 hoursFeed on cue, not by the clock
Time per side, breastfeeding10 to 20 minutesWatch for swallowing and relaxing hands
Bottle feed15 to 20 minutesPaced feeding: upright, breaks, let the baby set the speed
Gap between feeds2 to 3 hours from the start of one feedLonger stretches come with age

What to log

The plain stopwatch and the lap timer work the same way without the feeding notes. For the stretch after a feed, the sleep timer runs a quiet countdown, and the 20 minute timer is handy for a planned side switch.

Frequently asked questions

How do I time each side?

Press Start when the baby latches and press Lap, or the L key, when you switch sides. Each lap shows the time on that side, and the total runs underneath.

How long should a newborn feed on each side?

Often 10 to 20 minutes per side, but babies vary a lot and the clock matters less than swallowing and wet diapers. Your pediatrician or lactation consultant can tell you what is normal for your baby.

How often should a newborn eat?

Roughly 8 to 12 times in 24 hours in the early weeks, feeding on cue rather than by the clock.
